In November 2015, when my colleague and I first visited The Darling Home for Kids, we didn’t know quite what to expect. We knew next to nothing about the Home, beyond what we had read on The Darling Home for Kids website. The purpose of our visit was to determine whether our organization would be a good fit to provide The Darling Home for Kids with a corporate philanthropic donation. Our one-hour visit was comprised of a meeting with members of the staff, as well as a tour of the facility. We learned about the core programs offered at the Home, including respite care, residential care and hospice palliative care, as well as their various therapeutic programs. We learned about the journey families take when they transition their children into the Home. We learned about the importance of funding and the key role volunteers play in the upkeep of the Home year-round. Following this visit, our organization made the decision to not only support The Darling Home for Kids with a corporate philanthropic donation, but to also adopt it as our volunteer charity of choice, engaging employees to help provide the love and care the Home, its staff and its residents need on an ongoing basis.
In June 2016, my own department spent a day volunteering at The Darling Home for Kids. Our team of 14 people spent a few hours cooking meals for the children, cleaning and preparing the outdoor toys for the summer; and tending to the gardens by doing some weeding and yard cleanup. When we completed our duties, we were led on an in-depth guided tour of the facility.
To say that our group was impacted by what we saw and learned would be an understatement. We were tremendously impressed with the facility and the role the staff plays to make The Darling Home a true home for their children. In the short time we spent volunteering at The Darling Home, we truly felt the compassion and empathy that the staff showed towards the children and their families. State-of-the-art amenities play a vital role in making the children’s stay at the Home the most comfortable possible. From hydrotherapy that allows children to soothe their pains and ease their muscles in water, to multi-sensory Snoezelen therapy that provides a fun and recreational environment for the children, to the many other therapeutic programs designed to meet the physical and developmental needs of the children, the Darling Home for Kids provides a superb and unique experience for children who are medically fragile and technology dependent.
It is reassuring to support an organization that provides all of the day-to-day necessities and comforts of home for these children, while providing their families with the opportunity to take a moment to refresh without worrying about their child’s safety and wellbeing. As a Roche Canada employee, I say this with great pride; we are proud to support The Darling Home for Kids.
