A Volunteer Spotlight on Kriss Bush, written by Susan Cleland

As I'm welcomed into his office, Kriss Bush immediately engaged me with his laid-back and witty conversation but also kept me wondering if we'd met before.  We hadn't, but that’s just Kriss.  He listens, shares his stories, and understands you so well that you'll swear you've known each other for years.  Nestled in the corner of the Pricewaterhouse Coopers building, Kriss' brightly illuminated office overlooks Oakville's busy life.  To be awarded such a magnificent location to showcase your professional talents is surely extremely impressive, but anyone who observes Kriss' huge smile and proud words could immediately see that of his many, many successes, his family is his... Father-Daughter Duo Bakes up a Storm at DHK!

Hi, we are Ava and Dave Badovinac.  We love volunteering at The Darling Home for Kids for many reasons.  We love putting smiles on other people’s faces, meeting new people (like the kids that stay there) and spending time together!  We also feel it is important to volunteer because we are very lucky to be Canadian and to be healthy, so this is how we show we are thankful.  Our favourite things to do are grocery shopping for the Home, baking for the kids, staff and other volunteers, and playing with the kids that are at the Home.  Our favourite thing to bake is chocolate chip banana... Extraordinary Teddy’s for Extraordinary Kids!

On Friday October 14th, Roche Canada, leaders in providing pharmaceutical and diagnostic solutions, donated 46 teddy bears to The Darling Home for Kids. “At Roche Canada, we understand the importance of healthcare organizations such as The Darling Home for Kids. The programs and services they offer medically complex children are essential to the health and wellbeing of families who live in our local community, we are most pleased to support them in this way” said Christina Archer, Country Head. The staff came together through a team building exercise, working with Dave Harris of Teambonders.com  “It's a Win-Win team building event, fun and altruistic, it benefits your team... Read More

Seeing the Darling Home Through the Eyes of a Parent & Supporter

Published: Sep 13, 2016 / Category: Volunteering

In November 2015, when my colleague and I first visited The Darling Home for Kids, we didn’t know quite what to expect. We knew next to nothing about the Home, beyond what we had read on The Darling Home for Kids website. The purpose of our visit was to determine whether our organization would be a good fit to provide The Darling Home for Kids with a corporate philanthropic donation. Our one-hour visit was comprised of a meeting with members of the staff, as well as a tour of the facility. We learned about the core programs offered at the Home, including respite care, residential care and hospice... A Day in the Life of Faith

A Day in the Life of Faith – one of our amazing kiddos with us for Summer Camp! Today I woke up at the Darling Home for Kids.  The first thing I saw was the wonderful staff coming to help me get ready for this exciting day.  I did not know what we were going to do, but I knew it was going to be fun! The best part about the morning is breakfast time, I love when I get to sit around and chat with my friends while having yummy food.  My favourite part about The Darling Home for Kids is the activities that we do... Softchoice Brings Real Spirit to DHK!

Published: Mar 14, 2016 / Category: Volunteering

Softchoice brings the spirit of the holidays!   This year we had the opportunity to welcome a new corporate volunteer group into our Home – Softchoice (http://www.softchoice.com).  Over the past few months two groups from this company have come to decorate for the holidays and we couldn’t have been happier with the level of enthusiasm, care, and eagerness they exhibited! They are already looking forward to coming back in 2016 to continue being involved with the Home.  Here is what Chantel Yack, Keystone Contracts Specialist from Softchoice, had to say about her group’s experience:   “When twelve of our Softchoice colleagues had the opportunity to volunteer with... Our Angel of the Year

Our Angel of the Year

Approximately 3 years ago I was a shy and quiet teenager who had only been in high school for a year. Like many other teenagers, I spent a lot of time on the computer doing…nothing in particular!  However, one day, that aimless browsing through the internet turned into a wonderful blessing in my life. I honestly can’t quite remember how - but I suddenly found myself on the website for the Darling Home for Kids. After looking through some pictures and learning more about it, I decided to sign up to be a peer volunteer, not knowing just how much this decision would shape my life. I... Read More

Gifts of Collaboration

Photography is a powerful form of human communication.  Through it we bear witness to our lives and the lives of others. As an advocate and professional photographer working in the areas of social justice and human interaction I have been privileged to bear witness to many stories of life in different parts of the world. Recently, I was invited to share time with the children and staff at The Darling Home for Kids in Milton, Ontario and asked to capture the moments of human interaction as the children experienced their day. The Darling Home is a state of the art facility caring for children who are medically fragile... Read More

A Cyclist’s Reflection – An Outlook on Wheels 2015

On August 26th, Jimmy Brennan and I participated in a charity bike ride called ‘Wheels for The Darling Home for Kids’. The Darling Home for Kids provides care for medically fragile children based out of Halton Hills, just north of Milton. After the visit there, I can tell you it’s a very special and cool place! Our day began with our arrival at the Home which has its own private lane winding through a mature wooded lot. Given its location within the Niagara Escarpment as part of a Butterfly sanctuary, it’s an incredibly peaceful and beautiful location. We quickly began to meet other riders in the parking... Bedtime Harp Therapy – An Instrument of the Angels

I LOVED my time at the Home on Friday.  Do you know it was my first time in the Snoezelen room?  Funny story… I started off playing in the family room for all kids before they went to bed.  Everyone was fine with the exception of the sweet little boy sitting to my left, very tiny and oh so cute.  As the TV volume was turned down, he connected that his TV was taken away and he became very upset.  The lovely staff member sat with him, tried to soothe him and figure out what was happening...I played quietly.  Well, as the staff member was consoling the... There is No Such Thing as a Typical Day

Published: Aug 10, 2015 / Category: Volunteering

I’ve been volunteering at The Darling Home for Kids for over a year. There really is no typical day at DHK! As a volunteer, I’ve done things that I normally don’t do in my quiet, reserved life.  For example, walking with the kids to the bottom of the hill and counting the number of times we can get a car to honk at us by shouting and waving! Not only did the kids have a blast, but some individuals stopped to say hi! My very first day volunteering I fed lunch to a teenaged boy; he resembled my nephew, and it’s hard not to make comparisons.  This... Read More

Fun For Everyone!

My family always looks forward to the Summer BBQ. We have attended 3 and always make sure to mark it down on our calendars.  It is a wonderful opportunity to connect with clients, families, volunteers and staff in a casual, relaxed atmosphere.  There is fun for everyone and the day is jam packed with so many activities for kids of all abilities.  The inclusive Playground, Sand Table, Art, Bouncy Castle, Cotton Candy, and Water Play were at the top of my kids’ list.  The Milton Fire Department and Paramedics were also on site answering all the children’s questions, as well as posing for pictures. The burgers were absolutely delicious and there was plenty of other yummy BBQ... GlaxoSmithKline makes our Home SPARKLE!!

Published: Jul 02, 2015 / Category: Volunteering

Springtime here at The Darling Home for Kids brings lots of excitement as we gear up for the summer months full of kids and events.  With the excitement of the summer also comes lots of work around the Home in preparation and anticipation; maintenance, cleaning, gardening, organizing, and more! Without the help of committed volunteer groups, completing these tasks would be unmanageable! This spring we had 10 groups come out to DHK to volunteer their time.  These 10 groups brought 142 volunteers into the Home giving us 606 hours in total of volunteer work – amazing! One of these groups included eight ladies from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) who... Read More

What a Magical Place to Volunteer!

I've been volunteering at The Darling Home for Kids for over 2 years and find it very hard to put into words what a magical place this is.   I was introduced to the organization many years ago.  I knew without question that I needed to find a way to help make a difference however I could, and it was my joy and pleasure to help in other capacities before joining the team as an administrative volunteer.  As I arrive at the Home on Tuesday mornings, I receive my request for administrative needs such as filing; helping to get envelopes in the mail for donations and the... What an Incredible Year!

With spring finally here The Darling Home for Kids is a flurry of activity as we prepare for a busy house full of children and laughter over the summer months.  Although often times the focus is on what lies ahead, at this time of year it is important that we glance back at all that we accomplished over the prior fiscal year. March 31st marked the end of our 2014-2015 fiscal year, and what an amazing year we have had.  Our reasons to celebrate are many, but there are some stand-out moments that made this year exceptional: -          In spring 2014 we envisioned the therapeutic experiences we... Through Our Donor’s Eyes – The Monte Carlo Inns

The Monte Carlo Inns has been committed to supporting The Darling Home for kids for over 15 years and I am thrilled to be associated with such an incredible charity that affects so many people’s lives. From the time The Monte Carlo Inns opened its first doors in 1985, it was always important to become involved with the community and contribute to many different causes, and it became part of the company platform. In the mid to late 90’s my father, Dominic Meffe (CEO & President), came into contact with Mr. Don Cherry and the seed was planted from that introduction. Although we knew The Darling... Read More

March Break Extravaganza!!!

On Friday March 13th our March Break Extravaganza began when a house full of kids rolled through our front doors for our March Break Camp.  Some parents were dropping off for a vacation to remember, others were looking forward to spending some one-on-one time with their other kids, and a few were simply counting the hours until they could get a good night’s sleep.   While parents were looking forward to the break, no doubt their kids were looking forward to their time at The Darling Home for Kids- time that would be jammed packed with activities and programs, caring staff and a whole lotta fun! This week... Read More

It’s all for the kids!

It's been over a year since I've been volunteering with The Darling Home for Kids, and what an amazing experience it has been. Walking through the doors of the home and getting to interact with some of these special little angels has been something that has compelled me to try and go over-and-above for this place; because if anyone deserves it, it is certainly them. I first decided to volunteer with The Darling Home for Kids because I truly believe that these children have been given to us on earth as a gift - a gift to embrace, love, and become a part of, and a gift...
